Welcome to the PipeTrader Meerschaum forum. We are hoping that this will be the pre-eminent place to not only come and ask questions, but also a great place to come and talk to other Meerschaum lovers about pipes and other items made from this wonderous material.

I've found that one of the best ways to color my meerschaums are smoke the pipes 'warm' enough that I can 'paint' the beeswax on them by drawing the 'stick' of it across the surface. I've tried pitting them in the oven to do this, but it's real easy to get them too hot that way. I then smoke them a few more times in succession like that, then what doesn't absorb I wipe off very gently. It's pretty fun.
I have briars, but the meerschaums are really nice for their very 'sweet' and clean affect to the tastes of the smoke.

So, your experience has been that more wax on the surface draws the color out from the tobacco as it burns? I think there is some validity, in my experience, to bear this out. I do know that the converse is true. If you smoke the pipe too hot and burn/evaporate/rub/etc off the wax on your meerschaum, you'll find a pipe that really won't color in the areas where the wax coating isn't working.
